Studying

International students have an orientation course to introduce them to the curriculum and student life and to give a brief introduction to Chinese society and the culture of Hong Kong. This course is generally offered in the university a week before the commencement of the semester. You can contact the International Student office of the University you have selected to find out more information.

Universities in Hong Kong have partnerships and collaborations with over 50 educational institutions in North America, Australia and Europe. Normally the exchange study program lasts for one or two semesters with agreements from with the home university regarding transfer of credits.

Healthcare

It is possible that due to the change in water, food, and climate, some international students may experience some discomfort and minor problems when they first arrive in Hong Kong. However, Hong Kong's medical facilities are among the finest in the world and all registered doctors and dentists are trained to international standards.

Rabies is present, and vaccination before arrival should be considered. Travellers to rural areas should consider immunisation against Japanese encephalitis and hepatitis B.

For those of you who may need hospital attention, you will be eligible for treatment in general wards, providing you have a Hong Kong Identity Card.

Accommodation

International full time students are normally offered on-campus accommodation. However, for those of you unable to find a place on campus, your university should assist you in searching for private accommodation.

Travel

Public transport in Hong Kong is extensive, efficient, and economical but traffic can be very congested during peak periods. The major modes of transport include large double-decker buses, minibuses, trains, taxis ferries and Mass Transit Railways.

Although many taxi drivers can speak English, it is advisable to write your destination in Chinese for them.

Tip: Where possible, when using buses and minibuses, try to have the exact change to hand, and remember to let the bus driver know where you want to get off.

Visa

Visitors from most countries can enter Hong Kong without a visa for periods varying from 7 days to 6 months depending on their nationalities. If you wish to stay longer, you must apply for a visa before travelling to Hong Kong. On arrival in Hong Kong, visitors have to satisfy immigration officers that they possess an onward or return ticket and that they have adequate funds for their stay in Hong Kong without work.

Travelling to Hong Kong for study or work will require visas.

Student visa
The Hong Kong Immigration Department issues student visas to applicants enrolling in full-time courses. Students should not enter Hong Kong with a tourist visa with the intention of converting it into a student visa. The following documents are required when applying for a student study visa:

  • A sponsorship form (ID 428D).
  • A letter of acceptance from your host university.
  • Evidence of your financial status covering your period of stay in Hong Kong.
  • Evidence of suitable accommodation.

All non-Hong Kong students who intend to stay for more than 6 months should obtain a Hong Kong Identity card after their arrival.
