Most airport towns have airport buses that connects the airport and the town centre. These are normally quite cheap and highly recommended if you are situated in close proximity to the town centre.
When travelling by bus, it is worth checking whether it is 'directo' or 'ruta', as this can add a couple of hours to your journey. The Madrid metro system is very straightforward and safe to use. Barcelona also has a very efficient metro system offering ten journeys for a set price with a 'bonocard', which includes all line changes.
